(The Southern African Times) – Senegalese President Macky Sall, who is also the current Chairman of the African Union, on Wednesday saluted Russian President Vladimir Putin for keeping dialogue channels open as a possible means to end the Ukraine crisis.
Sall said he had spoken to Putin as Russia’s military operation in Ukraine continues.
“I welcome my meeting this morning with President Putin in my capacity as Chairman of the African Union to seek a lasting ceasefire in Ukraine,” he said. “I salute his attentiveness and his willingness to maintain dialogue for a negotiated outcome to the conflict.”
Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine on February 24.
Senegal was one of 35 countries that abstained from the March 2 vote at the United Nations General Assembly, which sought to condemn Russia’s military action.
