LONDON, (SATSports) – English Premier League club Burnley signed Côte d’Ivoire international Maxwel Cornet from French Ligue 1 side Lyon on a five-year contract in a deal reported to be worth around €15 million (£12.9 million).
Cornet completed “one of the largest transfer deals” in the club’s history following the completion of a medical, the club said in a statement on Sunday before their league match at home to Leeds United.
“The versatile 24-year-old, who can operate in several attacking and defensive roles on either flank, will link up with Sean Dyche’s squad following the international break,” the statement added.
Cornet said he was excited to join Burnley where he will play with and against several of the greatest players in the world.
“I have developed the greatest respect for Burnley and what the club has done. I welcome the challenge of hard work and am fully committed to doing what I can to contribute. I look forward to what we can achieve.”
Cornet, who also played for Metz, another French side, made more than 200 appearances for Lyon during a seven-year spell in which he scored 51 goals.
Burnley chairman Alan Pace said the club was delighted to have secured the services of “such a talented player with Champions League pedigree”.
“The wide position was identified as in need of strengthening and we saw Maxwel as the ideal player to fulfil this with talent, versatility, and pace.”
Cornet becomes the fourth signing by Burnley this transfer window following the arrivals of Nathan Collins, Wayne Hennessey and Aaron Lennon.
