HARARE, (The Southern African Times) – The month of February has always been synonymous with love but the Zimbabwean RnB chanters have taken the heat of February 2022 up a notch. From the very first day of the month there has been a consistent dosage of Cupid’s arrows launched by the younger generation of Zimbabwean artists.

NYASHA DAVID- PERFECT REASONS

The Zimbabwean music industry needs to pay a lot more attention to Nyasha David. Against the backdrop of his recently released album Songs of David, the alt-R&B singer is continuing to return to the atmospheric, minimal sound of his earlier releases, but his newest release Perfect Reasons slightly goes in a different direction. Behind the swooning lyrics and timeless instrumentation, the song touches on the growing pains of love. By the time the tune hits the bridge, the young crooner lays his soul bare as he sings in a register that flows through you like a smooth dark liquor—no chaser required. Released on the first day of the month, with befitting visuals, Nyasha David describes the song as a reminder that in the midst of unwanted circumstances love is still the best choice one can make.

HILLZY- CHARGIE

Hillzy’s latest offering, Chargie, came in the first week of February 2022. With an upbeat backdrop that marries trap drums to bouncy synths and one of the catchiest hooks in Hillzy’s repertoire, “Chargie” is a certified banger. The video also adds fuel to the fire, but more than anything else, that chorus just does not leave your head. Perhaps the biggest fact to take away from Hillzy’s music is that he produces the music himself which comes as a surprise because he always has that, “This is a Mr MaSinh” production. A pseudonym for his own production. Impressive much.

KAE CHAPS- GEHENA

Love can, at times, be a trip to hell, and R&B crooner Kae Chaps is equipped with a devastating combination of a “heart of gold and some brass knuckles” on the scorching ballad “Gehena” which literally translates to “Hell” The up and coming R&B talent subverts tropes of love songs in which one finds himself victimized by naiveté and blind to red flags. The cinematography on the visuals did justice to the song as the script shows Kae Chaps madly in love as he strolls in the park with his girlfriend who eventually got married to someone else. A visibly intoxicated Kae Chaps tries to gatecrash the wedding. The cadence is commendable along with the hypnotic yet assertive vocals. Kudos to Rain Midzi who stars as the girlfriend on the video.

GARRY MAPANZURE: SPECIAL DELIVERY ALBUM

As if not to be outdone, Garry Mapanzure released his 14 track debut album on the 5th of February 2022. The Masvingo-bred singer fit themes of love and perseverance, family values, party life and embracing the beauty of the love in a little over fifty minutes of groovy poeticism on the album Special Delivery. The first song alone talks about getting a girl from Malawi and showing her around Zimbabwe, as the crooner paints images of a destination-less journey with nothing but harmonious love. The standout tracks on the project of course feature Kae Chaps on a track titled On You and Hillzy on Chara Chimwe. The project is undoubtedly solid as it fulfills our palates while leaving room for us to crave more. Needless to mention there’s an Amapiano track featuring his brother Victor. A special delivery indeed.
