(SATSports) – Rwanda’s national soccer team has its eyes set on victory against neighboring Uganda to boost its chances of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Amavubi are currently bottom of Group E with a single point from two games, having lost to Mali in their first game before holding Kenya to a draw in the second.

Rwanda will host Uganda at the Kigali Stadium on Thursday, October 7 for the crucial tie.

A win against the Uganda Cranes will see them emerge from the bottom of the Group standings. The visitors on the other hand also need to win to give themselves a chance of rising to the top of the Group before the current international break ends.

Ahead of Thursday’s game, Rwanda captain Haruna Niyonzima said the team will focus on improving its performance and taking advantage of the chances that will present themselves.

“The game we played against Kenya was not bad because we had many chances to score but failed to use them, so we have to make sure that we can fight for three points at home against Uganda,” The New Times local media outlet quotes Niyonzima to say.

“There are positives we need to pick up and upgrade and improve in the next match, and there are negatives that we need to correct because we are playing against a good side. Scoring is our main target and it is something that we need to go and work on.”

Currently ranked at 148 on the latest FIFA World Rankings, Rwanda has never qualified for a World Cup.
