This year will mark exactly 20 years since you began fleet management, tell us about the sector 20 years ago, what were the regional market challenges that time?
20 years ago, the fleet management sector in South Africa was relatively underdeveloped compared to more developed markets. One of the main challenges facing the industry was a lack of standardization and regulation. This made it difficult for fleet managers to accurately track and manage their vehicles, as well as for customers to compare the services offered by different providers.
Additionally, there were few specialized fleet management software solutions available, which further hindered the industry’s growth. Furthermore, the country was facing political and economic instability which also had a negative impact on the sector.
How would you describe progress of fleet management in Africa, at what rate is the industry growing?
In recent years, the fleet management industry in Africa has made significant progress in terms of growth and development. The industry has been expanding at a steady rate, driven by a growing demand for fleet management services from businesses and government organizations across the continent.
With the help of technological advancements and the increasing availability of specialized software and GPS tracking systems, fleet managers are now able to more effectively track and manage their vehicles, improving efficiency and reducing costs.
However, the rate of growth varies across different regions in Africa. In some countries, the fleet management industry is still in its early stages of development, while in others it is more mature. Factors such as economic stability, infrastructure, and government support have an impact on the growth of the industry in each country.
The South African fleet management market is dominated by five players with broad telematics portfolios which are all headquartered in the country and have installed bases of more than 100 000 Fleet Management units.

Emerging fleet management companies in Africa face a number of barriers to entry that may differ depending on the country they are emerging from but we do we have some common challenges.
In many parts of Africa, the infrastructure is not well developed, which makes it difficult for fleet management companies to track and manage vehicles effectively. This can also make it more difficult for customers to access services.
Another factor is economic instability in some countrieswhich can make it difficult for emerging fleet management companies to secure funding and attract customers.
Many emerging fleet management companies in Africa may not have access to the latest technology, such as GPS tracking systems and specialized software, which can make it difficult for them to compete with more established companies. In some countries, there may be a lack of regulation and standardization in the fleet management industry, which can make it difficult for emerging companies to navigate the market and establish themselves.
The fleet management industry is becoming increasingly competitive in Africa, with many established companies vying for market share. This can make it difficult for emerging companies to gain a foothold in the market. Then some African countries may experience political instability, which can make it difficult for fleet management companies to operate and also can affect the business environment.
However, some governments in Africa are taking steps to address these barriers and create a more favorable environment for the fleet management industry, such as investing in infrastructure and supporting new technologies.
For existing companies, has there been expansion into other African countries, sub-regional expansion, are there any challenges to that?
For existing fleet management companies in Africa, there has been some expansion into other African countries and sub-regional expansion. However, this expansion comes with its own set of challenges. Some of the main challenges include Lack of local knowledge, Political instability, Cultural and language barriers, Logistics and transportation challenges, Differences in regulations & standards, and Limited access to technology.
Despite these challenges, Afrirent Fleet still has an appetite for expanding into other African countries and sub-regions, driven by the growing demand for its services. Are there enough organisations like Southern African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association in the region?
Southern African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (SAVRALA) is an organization that represents the vehicle rental and leasing industry in Southern Africa. It is one of the few organizations of its kind in the region, and it plays an important role in promoting the industry and advocating for the interests of its members.
However, it’s worth noting that SAVRALA only represents the Southern Africa region and there are other countries in Africa that do not have similar organizations. While there are some other organizations that focus on the fleet management industry in Africa, the number of such organisations is relatively limited compared to more developed markets.
This may be due to a lack of standardization and regulation in the industry, as well as a lack of awareness about the benefits of such organizations.
