South Africa’s power utility Eskom intends to import power from Mozambique and other countries in the southern African region to address power shortages facing the country, said the office of the Presidency Thursday.

“Eskom has identified up to 1,000 MW of additional power to be imported from Mozambique and other countries in the Southern African Development Community region, pending negotiations and regulatory approvals,” said a spokesperson for the Presidency Vincent Magwenya at a press briefing.

South Africa is facing energy challenges with people going for six hours a day without electricity.

“This is in addition to the 300 MW already secured through the Southern African Power Pool,” he said.

Eskom said earlier that 11 generators with a total capacity of 5,084 MW have suffered breakdowns since Tuesday morning, and stage-six rolling blackouts have been implemented continuously from Wednesday until further notice.
