(The Southern African Times) – Real Madrid defender Raphaël Varane has tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Spanish side’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against England’s Liverpool.
The defending La Liga champions announced the development on Tuesday, following tests conducted in the morning ahead of the evening game.
No other player was announced to have tested positive.
Varane was on the substitute’s bench for his side’s La Liga win against Eibar on Saturday.
His positive test result further limits Zinedine Zidane’s defensive options for both Champions League quarter-final legs as well as the weekend El Classico showdown against Barcelona.
Captain Sergio Ramos was also ruled out due to a calf injury sustained on international duty with Spain.
